Strand, Delfine und Joghurt - Beach, Dolphins and Yoghurt

Am Dienstag ging es mit der Fähre nach Lantau, der größten der vorgelagerten Inseln Hong Kongs. Am Dörfchen Mui Wo angekommen wollten wir etwas wandern aber wir haben keine Karte gefunden. Also sind wir zu einem der Tempel,

Tuesday we took the ferry to Lantau, the biggest of Hong Kongs outlying islands. When we arrived in the village of Mui Wo we wanted to go hiking but we didn't find a proper map so we walked to a temple,

dann noch zum Silver Mine Waterfall

then to the silver mine waterfall

und zur Silver Mine Cave. Die war allerdings zubetoniert also nicht sehenswert. Dann ging es zum Strand der total leer war. Naja, so 15 andere Leute waren auch da. Dort sind wir schwimmen gegangen und haben ein Nickerchen gemacht.

Als wir gehen wollten sind auf einmal ein ganzer Haufen Chinesen mit Eimern aufgetaucht und haben angefangen Sandburgen zu bauen.

When we were about to leave a big group of chinese people showed up with buckets and started building sand castles. 

Zum Abendessen gab es Frozen Joghurt.

For dinner we had frozen yoghurt.

Gestern ging es dann erneut nach Lantau aber an die Nordseite um dort mit dem Boot aufs Meer zu fahren und nach pinken Delfinen Ausschau zu halten und wir hatten Erfolg!

Yesterday we went to Lantau again, but to the north to board a boat and look for pink dolphins. And we were successful

 

Danach sind wir mit dem Bus zum großen Buddha auf Lantau gefahren. Der eigentliche Touristenweg ist mit der Gondel aber da standen uns zuviele Leute an.



After that we took the bus to the big Buddha in Lantau. Now the proper tourist way would have been the cablecar but there were too many people queueing up.

 
Von dort wollten wir dann ins Fischerdorf Tai O wandern aber der Weg hätte 5 Stunden gedauert und da wäre es schon dunkel gewesen also haben wir uns entschlossen stattdessen in Richtung Reservoir zu laufen, 5,5 km und etwa 2 Stunden Abstieg. Der Weg sah nicht so aus als würden da oft Leute entlang laufen, aber wir kamen lebend runter und bevor die Sonne unterging. Dann sind wir wieder nach Mui Wo gefahren mit dem Bus und haben dort zu Abend gegessen.


From there on we wanted to hike to Tai O, a small fishing village. But the way would have taken us 5 hours and by that time it would have been dark. So instead we walked down to the reservoir, 5.5km and 2 hours of a descent. The way didn't seem like a lot of people take it but we made it down alive and before the sun set. We then went back to Mui Wo and had dinner there. 

Heute ging es nur etwas shoppen am Jademarkt. Dort wird man allerdings sehr von den Verkäufern bedrängt. Wir saßen dann noch eine Zeit im Kowloon Park und sind durch die Malls getigert. Ich habe bestimmt eine Viertel Stunde lang Bonbonmacher beobachtet.




Today we went shopping at the jade market. The sellers there are very up in your face though. We then sat in Kowloon Park for a while and strolled the malls for a bit. I was watching the candymakers for about 15 minutes all fascinated.

Dann sind wir nach Hause um noch Koffer zu packen. Abends gings nochmals aus dem Haus über den Tempelmarkt um letzte Besorgungen zu machen und morgen geht's schon wieder heim.


We then went home to pack the suitcases. In the evening we strolled the temple market once again to run some last errands because tomorrow, we are going home.

Peak Trail

Vor 2 Tagen sind wir nach Hong Kong. Unser Hotel ist ok, leider haben wir einen Raucherraum bekommen. Dafür sind die Betten mit einer richtigen Matratze ausgestattet und Internet gibt es jetzt auch wieder. Die Überquerung der Grenze war etwas anstrengend: viele Menschen, aktives Anstehen und ziemliches Gedränge, daher haben wir es nach der Ankunft auch eher etwas ruhiger zugehen lassen. Wir sind nochmals über den Tempelmarkt geschlendert (ein Abendmarkt der direkt vor der Tür ist, mit allerlei gefälschten Produkten, Souvenirs, Sexspielzeugen und Wahrsagern) und haben uns etwas zu Abend essen gesucht. Es gab Sushi.

Two days ago we arrived in Hong Kong. Our Hotel is alright, but we did get a room for smokers unfortunately. But the beds have a real mattress and we do have internet. Crossing the border was a but exhausting: lot's of people, active queueing and a lot of shoving in general, so after we got to the hotel we took it a little slower. We went and looked around the temple market (a night market that is right in front of the door with all kinds of forged products, souvenirs, sex toys and fortune tellers)  and we searched for a place to eat. It turned out to be sushi.

Gestern sind wir zum botanischen und zoologischen Garten, der botanisch nichts zu bieten hat und sonst ein paar Vögel und Primaten in viel zu kleinen Käfigen hält. Dafür ist der Eintritt umsonst.

Yesterday we went to the botanical and zoological garden, which didn't have a lot to offer in the botanical section and only had a few birds and primates in way too small cages. But there was no admission fee.

Zu Mittag gab es thailändisch und anschließend haben wir uns mehrere Stunden in einem Kaufhaus verirrt, mal rausgefunden und in ein dubioses Treppenhaus gegangen weil da angeblich ein Nagelstudio war. Dort haben wir uns eine Maniküre geben lassen (ich habe meine innerhalb einer Stunde zerstört weil der Nagellack nicht völlig trocken war und ich ja unbedingt Schuhe anprobieren musste) und dann sind wir ins nächste Kaufhaus. Dort haben wir den besten Frozen Yoghurt gefunden, der war dann Abendessen. Meiner hatte eine Schicht Obstsalat dann Joghurt dann Kekskrümel und Bananenmus und dann wieder Joghurt, Kekskrümel Joghurt und Schokoguss mit Mandelstücken und einer Erdbeere. Leider hab ich kein Foto, da ich mich direkt hineingestürzt habe.

For lunch we had thai food and then went and got lost in a mall, found a way out only too walk into a very shifty stairway to follow the signs to a nail studio. We got a manicure which I ruined within an hour, because I just had to try on a couple of shoes when we walked into the next mall. But we found the most amazing frozen yoghurt there which was our dinner. Mine had a layer of fruit salad, then yoghurt then cookie crumbs, mashed bananas, yoghurt, more cookie crumbs, more yoghurt and finally chocolate sauce with almonds and a banana on top. Unfortunately i wasn't able to take a picture because I jumped right in.

Sehr nett finde ich, dass einem hier gesagt wird auf welche Richtung man auf der Straße gucken muss, ist ja Linksverkehr und verwirrend. Wir laufen auch ständig gegen den Strom.

What I really like here, is that the tell you which way to look when you want to cross the road. Left-hand traffic is after all very confusing. We are also always walking on the wrong side of the sidewalk.

Heute sind wir auf den Peak gelaufen. So und jetzt kommen die ganzen Fotos, da war es nämlich wunderschön. Wir haben den Tip meines Marco Polo Reiseführers genommen und sind mit den Bus hinter den Peak gefahren zur Haltestelle Pok Fa Lum Reservoir Road und dann in Richtung Peak Tram gelaufen, mit möglichst vielen Umwegen und dort gab es Eidechsen und Vögel und Dschungel und so.

Today we went up the peak. Ok, now you will get a lot of pictures because this is just that beautiful. We followed a hint of my traveling guide and took the bus to the Pok Fa Lum Reservoir Road and hiked the trail to the peak tram station with as many detours as possible. We saw lizards and birds and jungle and other things.

Und dann springt Kim plötzlich schreiend zur Seite. Das da hing quer über den Weg und wir waren gerade nichtsahnend drunter durchgelaufen.

And then Kim jumped aside screaming. This was hanging across the way and we just walked underneath unsuspecting.

Hier noch ein paar der Aussichten auf Hong Kong. Leider war es heute sehr bewölkt und zum Smog dazu sieht man halt nicht so viel.

Bei der Tram haben wir dann etwas Kulturschock gehabt, da waren plötzlich wieder so viele Leute und Lärm nach 5 Stunden Ruhe. Abends gab es dann ganz im Sinne möglichst viel asiatisches Essen aber bloß nichts chinesisches diesmal vietnamesisch zu Abend. Ich hatte Vermicelli mit Röstzwiebeln, Erdnüssen, Lauch und großen Salatblättern und Frühlingsrollen. Da ich nicht wusste wie ich das alles einzeln essen soll mit den Stäbchen und das auch irgendwie komisch schmeckte hab ich alles in die Salatblätter gerollt und mit den Fingern gegessen. Ich war mal wieder der letzte Höhlenmensch, aber dafür war es lecker. Danach sind wir noch auf der Suche nach Nachtisch durch die Stadt geirrt und haben dabei den seltsamsten Sport entdeckt: Marschieren. Da haben sich so eine Gruppe Chinesen von einem Drill Sergeant anschreien lassen und sind dann rechts links rechts links über den Platz marschiert...

When we got to the tram we got a little bit of a culture shock, there were so many people and noise suddenly after the serene walk for 5 hours. In the evening we went for vietnamese food, since we are apparently trying to eat all kinds of asian food but chinese. I had vermicelli with roasted onions, peanuts, leek and lettuce leaves with spring rolls. Since I don't know how you are supposed to eat that with chop sticks and it was a bit weird to eat it separately I made a wrap out of my ingredients and ate it as fingerfood like a true barbarian, but it was very tasty. After that we started searching for dessert and strolled around the area which made us find the weirdest exercise method: Marching. There was this group of chinese people that was being yelled at by a drill sergeant and then they walked, left right left right, around the square...

Splendid China

Gestern waren wir noch abends mit ein paar anderen Kursteilnehmern am Daneisha Strand und haben dort etwas getrunken. Vor allem Cocktails die nach Zahnpasta schmeckten...

Yesterday we went to the Daneisha beach in the evening with a few other course participants. We had a couple of drinks, mainly cocktails that tasted like toothpaste.

Heute war der letzte Kurstag. Deswegen ging es nach der Hälfte des Tages zum Splendid China & Chinese Folk Village Themenpark. Dies ist ein Park mit Miniaturen chinesischer Sehenswürdigkeiten und über die chinesischen Kulturen. Hier ist die Karte oder auch die Karte der völligen Navigation

Today was the last day of the course. That's why we went to the Splendid China & Chinese Folk Village theme park. It's filled with miniatures of chinese sights and information about Chinese cultures.

Leider war die Wasserschlacht Arena geschlossen, da 30 °C zu kalt sind um sich mit Wasserpistolen zu beschießen. Dafür haben wir über die Wichtigkeit der Transformer für die chinese Kultur gelernt:

Danach ging es noch in der Shenzhener Innenstadt zu abend essen und es war echt lecker. Auch wenn es ein paar seltsame Sachen gab wie Knorpel. Ich hab dafür aber einen ganzen Shrimp probiert. Mit Kopf und Schale und allem..

After that we went for dinner in downtown Shenzhen and it was really good. But there were a few weird things like cartilage. But I tried an entire shrimp. Like with shell and head and everything...

Shenzhen Workshop

etzt bin ich seit etwas über 2 Tagen in China, um zu dem Kurs Human Population Genetic Analyses zu gehen. Wir kamen Sonntag spätnachmittags in Shenzen im Industriegebiet Yantian an. Untergebracht sind wir in einem, dem Forschungsinstitut BGI zugehörigen, Apartmentkomplex. Nicht schön! Die Betten sind steinhart, was vor allem daran liegt, dass die Matratze hauptsächlich aus einer Holzplatte besteht. Das Bad ist super eklig und schimmlig und in der Küche klebt überall das Fett. Es wirkt als wäre hier noch nie geputzt worden. Ansonsten ist es unmöbliert also kann man nirgends sitzen und ist sehr hellhörig, was hauptsächlich deswegen stört weil die nachts draußen bohren. Hier ist auch ein Foto von unserer Aussicht. Man kann das BGI Gebäude am Ende der Straße sehen.

Now I've been to China for a little more than 2 days, to do a course in Human Population Genetics Analysis. We got to Shenzen, Yantian industrial district sunday late afternoon. We are housed in an apartment complex belonging to the research center BGI. Not nice at all.. The beds are super hard, which is because the mattress is made mainly of a wooden board. The bathroom is pretty nasty and moldy and there is grease everywhere in the kitchen. It looks like it has never been cleaned. Other than that it is not furnished.. so you got nowhere to sit. It's also very badly soundproofed, which is mainly a problem because they drill outside the entire night. Here is a picture of our view. You can see the BGI building at the end of the road.

Der Kurs ansonsten ist gut aber etwas chaotisch. Die Computerübungen können nicht ordentlich betreut werden da über 100 Teilnehmer im Kurs sind. Dies hat am Anfang auch dazu geführt, dass nicht genug Strom vorhanden war und deswegen Multisteckdosenketten gelegt wurden die dann nur schubweise Strom geliefert haben. Ansonsten war es auch eher schlecht vorbereitet. Viele der wichtigen Informationen kamen am Freitag oder noch später und somit sind viele der Computer, auch meiner, nicht mit den nötigen Programmen ausgestattet. Herunterladen kann man hier auch nichts mehr, da das Internet zu langsam ist. 

The course itself is good but a little chaotic. The computer exercises can not be well  supervised because there are more than 100 participants. This also meant that on the first day we didn't have enough electricity. So the build chains of extension cords which than only occasionally had an electric current. A lot of the informations regarding the course where not sent out till Friday and later which meant a lot of people don't have all the required programs installed, including myself. But we can't download here because the internet is too slow.

Wir werden momentan in der Kantine verköstigt. Das Essen ist eigentlich ganz gut aber man muss immer um die Hühnerfüße herum manövrieren. Auch anderes Fleisch besteht oft zum Großteil aus Knochen, ist also auch nicht so toll zum Essen. 

We are getting food in the cafeteria. It's actually not that bad but you have to maneuver around the chicken feet. Also other meat consists a lot of bones mostly, which is also a bit annoying to eat.

Koh Phangan Restaurant

Wir waren gestern abend noch thailändisch essen im Koh Phangan. Das Essen ist super lecker aber das Beste an der Sache war die Deko wie im Bild zu sehen ist.. viele viele kleine bunte Lichter, Plastikpflanzen und Tiere und so. Einmal die Stunde gehen dann alle Lichter aus und es fängt an zu gewittern. Verrückt.. 

Yesterday evening we went to a Thai restaurant called Koh Phangan. The food was super good but the best was the decoration as you can see in the picture. Lots of small colourful lights and plastic plants and animals and so on. Once an hour the lights turn off and a thunderstorm starts. Crazy!

Nailing

Am Freitag habe ich mein erstes Nailing gesehn. Das ist nichts perverses sondern ein zeremonieller Akt der Doktorarbeit. Dabei nagelt der Doktorant seine frisch gedruckte Doktorarbeit an eine Holzwand (Ich mach da irgendwann noch ein Foto von). Das ganze ist angelehnt an Martin Luthers Nageln seiner Thesen an die Tür. Danach gibt es dann anstossen mit Sekt und etwas zu knabbern.

Mein Freitag war demnach von einer Kaffeepause zur nächsten durchsetzt (wir haben Freitag morgen immer Institutskaffee und Kuchen). Abends war dann noch eine der Naturwissenschaftsdoktoranten... die war jedoch recht langweilig. Ich bin danach noch mit den Kollegen auf eine Party und anschliessend in die Disko. War sehr lustig hat sich aber gerächt als ich am nächsten morgen früh aufstehen musste, da ich einer Freundin versprochen habe mit ihr nach Stockholm zum Shoppen zu fahren. Da waren wir jedoch sehr erfolglos. Wintermode ist einfach zu trist.

Last Friday I went to my first nailing. That's nothing kinky but a ceremonial act of the PhD-Thesis. The PhD student who has just received the freshly printed copy of his thesis will nail it against a wooden wall (I will provide a picture someday). It comes from Martin Luther nailing his theses against a wooden door. Afterwards there will be sparkling wine and snacks. 

My fridays was, therefore, full of coffee breaks (friday mornings the department has a coffee and cake break). In the evening there was another one with the Science PhD students... but that was pretty boring. Afterwards I went to a party with some colleagues and then clubbing. It was fun but also not the best idea as I had to get up quite early the next day because I promised a friend to go shopping with her in Stockholm. However, we were not successful, winter clothing is just so grey.
