kubb and welcome reception

mein Computer ist im Moment in der Reparatur daher nur sporadische Updates. Letzten Freitag haben wir an einem Kubb Tournament teilgenommen und kläglich verloren. Naja, zumindest ein Spiel von dreien haben wir gewonnen. Aber ins Finale haben wir es damit nicht geschafft... ansonsten war mein Wochenende ereignislos, was auch ganz nett war. Sonntags war ich shoppen, neue Pullis, warme Strumpfhosen und Pumps. Das alles wurde heute auf die Willkommensgala getragen. Allerdings musste man da viel stehen daher hab ich irgendwann zu Turnschuhen gewechselt. Die Gala fand im Gustavanium statt und diesmal hab ich es auch ins Anatomie Theater geschafft. Der Raum wurde früher genutzt um Medizinstudenten an Autopsien teilnehmen zu lassen und ist echt sehenswert. Die Ränge sind so konzipiert, dass man nicht umfällt wenn man bewusstlos wird und die wandfarben sind so gewählt, dass man die Flecken nicht so sieht wenn sich mal einer übergibt.

My computer is currently being repaired so there is only going to be sporadic updates. Last Friday we participated in a Kubb tournament and lost. Well, at least we won one game or of 3. But we did not make it to the finales this way. Other than that my weekend was really not exciting which was nice. Sundays i went shopping for new sweaters, warm tights, and heels which I was wearing for the welcome reception. But we had to stand a lot during that so I switched to sneakers after a while. The reception was at Gustavanium and this time I also made it to the anatomical theater. This room was used to show dissections to medical students and is very recommendable to go see.  The ranks are designed so you can't fall over when you faint and the colors of the wall are chosen so you don't see the stains when someone threw up.

Regen - Rain

So schnell schlägt das Wetter um. Ich bin heute auf dem Weg in die Arbeit klatschnass geworden. Ich muss mir wohl noch so ein komplett Regenoutfit kaufen: Jacke und Hose. Eine Arbeitskollegin hat mir eine Hose geliehen und ein paar Schuhe, jetzt hängt der Rest im Büro zum trocknen... 

This is how fast the weather can change. On my way to work today I got super soaked. So I guess I have to buy a rain outfit: coat and pants. A colleague was so nice to lend me her extra pants and shoes so now my pants are hanging in the office to dry

kulturnatten

Gestern war kulturnatten (Kulturnacht) in Uppsala. Trotz des Namens fing das Ganze schon morgens an. Kunstausstellungen, Tanzgruppen und Musik in der ganzen Stadt verteilt und dazu noch Sonderveranstaltungen in den Museen und anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten.
Ich bin zuerst zum botanischen Garten. Dieser liegt direkt neben meiner Arbeit wo ich vorher noch vorbei musste um zu schauen ob mein Fahrrad noch da steht. Hatte am Abend zuvor beim Whiskey Club etwas zuviel Bier getrunken und wollte dann nicht mehr fahren.

Yesterday was kulturnatten (culture night) in Uppsala. Despite the name it started early morning. There were art exhibitions, dance groups and music spread all over town and also special events in the museums and other sights. 
I first went to the botanical gardens which are right beside my work, where I had to go to see whether my bike was still there. I had a bit too much beer at whiskey club the night before and I didn't want to bike after that.

Danach bin ich in die Stadt und war etwas bummeln bis ich mich dann mit ein paar Freundinnen getroffen habe. Wir haben uns den Dom angesehen, die höchste Kirche Skandinaviens, in der einige Könige und Linné begraben liegen.

After that I went downtown to stroll though some stores. I met some friends and we went and visited the Uppsala Cathedral. It's the highest church in Scandinavia and some kings and Linnaeus is buried there.

Danach ging es noch ins Gustavianum, das älteste noch stehende Universitätsgebäude. Dieses ist nun zum Teil ein Museum in dem vorallem Kuriositäten ausgestellt werden. Es hat eine Anatomieabteilung, eine ägyptische mit Mumien und die Abteilung mit der Augsburger Kunstkammer: eine aufwendig gezimmerte Truhe mit versteckten Türen und Schubladen die sich nur in bestimmten Kombinationen öffnen lassen. Darin wurde allerlei Sammelsurium der ganzen Welt aufbewahrt, ein Spielzeug und Wunderkabinet für die Reichen.

After that we went to the Gustavianum. This is the oldest, still standing building of the university. It is now partly a museum that exhibits mostly curiosities. There is an egyptian section with mummies, an anatomy section, and th section with the Augsburg art cabinet. The art cabinet is a very elaborately worked chest with hidden drawers and doors that can only be opened in certain combinations. In it is a whole collection of weird things from all over the world. It was a toy and a curiosity cabinet for the rich.

Sonst gibt es nur zu erzählen das ich mittlerweile einen Flug nach China gebucht habe: eine Woche Workshop in Shenzen mit einer anschließenden Woche Urlaub in Hong Kong. War da schonmal jemand? Irgendwelche Tips oder Empfehlungen?

Other than that I can only tell you that by now I have booked a flight to China: One week workshop in Shenzen and another week holiday in Hong Kong. Has anyone been there before? Any advice or recommendation?

Wir sind heute zum großen See geradelt. Ich war auch schwimmen, war allerdings die einzige aus unserer Gruppe.

We biked to the lake today. I also went swimming, but I was the only one of our group.

Surströmming

Gestern Abend nach der Arbeit gab es eine Surströmmingverkostung. Das ist fermentierter Hering aus Nordschweden. Das klingt zwar schon ein bisschen seltsam aber ist alles harmlos bis man es riecht: Wie wenn man seinen Müll vor dem zweiwöchigen Sommerurlaub vergessen hat auszuleeren und dann den Deckel zum ersten Mal aufmacht. Geschmeckt hat es allerdings gar nicht so schlimm. Ich muss es jetzt nicht nochmals essen aber ich habe zumindest aufgegessen. Traditionell wird Surströmming auf Tunnbröd (Dünnbrot, gibt es in harter oder weicher Variante) mit Kartoffeln, Butter, saurer Sahne (die hilft unglaublich), Schnittlauch  und Zwiebeln serviert. Das nächste Problem jedoch ist, man isst es mit Alkohol, was dazu führt das man öfter mal aufstößt und dann den Geruch immer wieder in der Nase hat für die nächsten 5 Stunden.  Bilder gibts weiter unten.

Ansonsten habe ich diese Woche eine Zusage für einen Workshop in Shenzen, China bekommen. Im Oktober flieg ich also das erste Mal nach Asien. Im Moment muss ich mich noch für mehr Funding bewerben um nächsten Sommer auf ein paar Konferenzen zu können.



Yesterday evening after work we tried Surströmming. It's a fermented herring from the north of Sweden. While this may already sound odd, but it's harmless until you smell it: Like when you forgot to take out the garbage before you went on summer vacation for two weeks and then open the lid for the first time. But it actually didn't taste as bad. Well, I don't have to eat it again but I ate my entire share. Tradtionally you eat Surströmming with Tunnbröd (Thin bread, which can be soft or hard) topped with potatoes, butter, sour cream (which helps a lot) chives and onions. The next problem arises because you drink it with alcohol and that will make you burp which will lead you to have the smell in your nose every time again for the next 5 hours or so.

Other than that I was accepted to a workshop in Shenzen, China. So this october I am flying to Asia for my first time. I am currently applying for more funding to go to some conferences next summer.

Surströmming

Vögel und Pilze - Birds and mushrooms

Gestern gings mit den Kollegen zum Vögelbeobachten und Pilzen sammeln hier hin. Das trifft sich ganz gut da wir Vögel- und Pilzexperten in der Gruppe haben. Pilze haben wir am Ende  aber keine gehabt. Zum einen war es zu trocken und zum anderen haben die Pilzleute zwar jeden Pilze mit lateinischem Namen identifiziert aber sie wussten nie so recht ob die essbar sind oder nicht. Aber Schweden ist echt schön.

Yesterday I went mushroom hunting and bird watching with my collegues here. Which is perfect because we have bird and mushroom experts in the group. However, we didn't bring any mushrooms home. On the one hand it was too dry and on the other the mushroom people were very good at identifying the mushrooms with latin names and all, but they were never quite sure if they were edible. But Sweden is gorgeous.

Nach dem ersten Stop ging es weiter in eine kleine Fischerstadt.

After the first stop we went to a small fishing village.

Danach ging es noch an einen anderen Wald an der Küste. Dort haben wir dann auch einen Seeadler gesehen. Allerdings nur durch das große Teleskop deswegen gibt es keine Bilder. Abends ging es dann noch in einen Pub.

After that we went to another forest at the coast. There we saw a white tailed eagle. Unfortunately there are no pictures as we could only see him through the big telescope. In the evening we went out to a pub.
