Nordlichter -Northern Lights

Wir hatten gestern die unglaublichsten Nordlichter über dem ganzen Himmel. Meine Kamera hatte leider nicht mehr viel Batterie und starb recht schnell aber wir waren eineinhalb Stunden in Gamla Uppsala und haben den Himmel angestarrt. Ich sollte in ein Stativ investieren..
Die Lichter haben an sich eigentlich keine Farbe wenn man so in den Himmel schaut und mit den Fotos unten ist etwas gespielt um die Farben herrauszubringen.

We had the most incredible northern lights yesterday spread over the entire sky. My camera didn't habe a lot of battery life left so it died really quickly but we were out in Gamla Uppsala for one and a half hours staring at the sky. I  should invest in a tripod. 
The lights do not have any color to the naked eye and the pictures have been tweaked in order to look like this.

Bandy

 Ich war gestern ein Bandyspiel anschauen. Das ist eine Mischung aus Eishockey und Fussball mit einem kleinen pinken Ball. Am schönsten ist, wenn sie Ecke haben stellt sich das gegnerische Team komplett ins Tor um es schwieriger zu machen..

Uppsala hat leider 4-7 gegen Vetlanda verloren.

I was at a Bandy game yesterday. It's a mix between ice hockey and soccer played with a little pink ball. The best thing is, when there is a corner shot, the entire opposing team will stand in the goal to make it harder to score.

Uppsala lost unfortunately 4-7 to Vetlanda.

Workshop on Genomics Cesky Krumlov - Krumau an der Moldau

Die letzten 2 Wochen war ich auf einem Workshop in Krumau an der Moldau in der Tschechei. Wir sind jeden Tag um 9 Uhr in den Kurs, der dann bis 10 Uhr abends ging. Dazwischen gab es zweimal 2 Stunden Pause für Mittag- und Abendessen. Die ersten 10 Tage haben wir es geschafft kein Restaurant zu wiederholen. Für die restlichen sind wir dann zu unseren Lieblingsplätzen zurück gegangen.

The last 2 weeks i spent at a workshop in Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. We had courses everyday from 9 in the morning till 10 in the evening. There were 2 breaks for lunch and dinner and we managed to go to a different Restaurant every meal for the first 10 days. After that we started repeating our favorite places.

Neben der ganzen Arbeit hatten wir auch etwas Unterhaltung. Am Samstag bekamen wir abends eine Stadtführung, dann ging es zur Eggenberg-Brauerei zum Abendessen und danach wurde gefeiert. Sonntags hatten wir frei und eine Schlossführung und eine Weinverkostung gebucht. Das Schloss ist im eigentlich geschlossen aber wurde für uns extra geöffnet. Der Workshop findet hier jedes Jahr statt und die Biologen sind fast die einzigen Touristen ausser den asiatischen Reisegruppen die sich hier nur ein paar Stunden aufhalten.

Besides all the work we also got some entertainment. On Saturday we got a guided tour through the town, and after we went tot the Eggenberg Brewery for dinner with a party later on. Sundays was off and we booked a tour through the castle and a wine tasting. The castle is usually closed in winter but was opened especially for us. The workshop happens every year in this town and the biologists are virtually the only tourists apart from asian travelling groups that only stop there for a couple of hours.

Das Schloss ist aus dem 12ten Jahrhundert und innen sehr gut erhalten bzw. restauriert. Am meisten beeindruckt hat mich das barocke Theater. Der Schlossführer hat den Fehler gemacht und uns im Theater allein gelassen wodurch wir natürlich alle Ecken ausgekundschaftet haben bis wir auf der Bühne gelandet sind.

The castle is from the 12th century and is very well maintained or restored. The most impressive was the baroque theatre. The tour guide made the mistake of leaving us alone there and we took the chance to explore all the corners until we ended up on stage.

Besuche - Visits

Der Juli war recht entspannt, beziehungsweise gab es eher Freizeitstress. Zuerst kam meine Mutter mich für eine Woche besuchen, und direkt im Anschluss Lina und Katharina auch nochmal für eine Woche. Also viel umher fahren und die schönen Ecken der Gegend anschauen. Mit Mama war ich in Stockholm das Fotografie Museum anschauen und dann weiter mit dem Auto raus aufs Archipelago

July was fairly relaxed, more of recreational stress. First my mother visited for a week and then directly after Lina and Katharina did for another. So we were driving around a lot and looked at the pretty corners around this area. With my mother I visited Stockholm's Photography museum  and took the car out to the Archipelago

Ausserdem gings an die Küste in den Norden. Dort war ich dann auch nochmal mit den Mädels.

Furthermore we went to the coast north of Uppsala. I also went there with the girls.

Letztes Wochenende war ich dann auch noch wandern, 35 Kilometer in 2 Tagen östlich von Uppsala an der Küste entlang, Etappe 10 und 11 des Roslagsleden. Da man hier ja wild campen darf ist sowas gar kein Problem, nur etwas blöd wenn alles zu steinig ist um drauf zu schlafen. Die erste Nacht im Wald war kein Problem allerdings haben wir am zweiten Abend an der Küste Probleme. Uns wurde dann ein Stück Wiese empfohlen, dass wie wir am nächsten Tag erfahren haben allerdings privat war.  Ups. 

Last weekend I was hiking. 35km in 2 days east of Uppsala along the coast. It was stage 10 and 11 of the Roslagsleden. Because wild camping is allowed in Sweden it is usually no problem except when it gets too rocky. The first night was not a problem as we camped in the woods. The second night however was difficult along the coast. Someone recommended a patch of grass that we then used but learned the next morning that it had been private land. Oops.

Puerto Rico

Die letzten 2 Wochen war ich in Puerto Rico. Dort fand eine große Konferenz für molekulare Biologie und Evolution statt bei der ich teilgenommen habe. Für meine erste Konferenz kann ich sagen, dass es total interessant war, ich habe viel neues gelernt, mit einigen interessanten Wissenschaftlern geredet und neue Ideen für meine Forschung bekommen. Und wenn man schonmal umsonst nach Puerto Rico fährt, dann sollte man doch auch noch ein bisschen bleiben und sich das Land ansehen. Die Konferenz selbst fand in San Juan statt, wo wir auch im Hotel geblieben sind, hier erstmal ein paar Eindrücke von San Juan:

The last two weeks I spent in Puerto Rico. There was a big conference on molecular biology and evolution I participated in. For my first conference I can say it was really interesting. I got to learn new thing, talked to a couple of interesting scientists and got new ideas for my own research. And if you get to go to Puerto Rico for free you have to stay a little and look at the country. The conference happened in San Juan, where we stayed in a hotel. Here are a few impressions:

Nach der Konferenz ging es zum El Yunque National Park, einem tropischen Regenwald der unglücklicherweise von Touristen überrannt war.

After the conference we went to El Yunque National Park, a tropical rainforest that was unfortunately overflowed with tourists. 

Am folgenden Tag gings zum Schnorcheln nach Culebra. Culebra hat einen der angeblich schönsten Strände der Welt, Flamenco Beach. Die einzelnen Komponenten stimmten: Türkises Wasser, feiner weißer Sand, langer Strand, Korallenriff... aber mir hat etwas der natürliche Schatten gefehlt.

The following day we went snorkeling to Culebra. Culebra has one of the proposedly most beautiful beaches in the world. The single components were right: turquoise waters, fine white sand, long beach, coral reef... but I was missing the natural shade.

Dann gings zur Laguna Grande um die bioluminescenten Dinoflagellaten zu sehen. Dazu sind wir abends mit dem Kayak durch einen Mangrovenwald zur Lagune gefahren und haben gewartet bis die Sonne unterging. Das war das beste überhaupt und sollte man in Puerto Rico nicht verpassen. Die Mikroorganismen leuchten bei Bewegung auf und wenn man die Hand ins Wasser steckt leuchtet alles drum herum. Wir haben uns das Wasser auf die Haut gespritzt und zugesehen wie die Einzeller pulsierten. Zudem war es ziemlich lustig bei vollständiger Dunkelheit durch den Mangrovenwald zu paddeln, zumal meine Kayak-Partnerin generell in die falsche Richtung gepaddelt hat, da sie das "um nach rechts zu kommen muss man links paddeln" nicht verstanden hat. Leider wars zu dunkel für Bilder.

Then we went to the Laguna Grande to see the bioluminescent dinoflagellates. Therefore, we went through a mangrove forest to the lagoon in the evening with a kayak and waited there until the lights went down. This was the best experience ever and should not be missed when going to Puerto Rico. The microorganisms emit light when moved and when you put your hand in the water everything around you lights up. We splashed the water on our skin and watched the single cell organisms flare up. Plus, it was very funny to find our way back through the mangroves in complete darkness with a kayak partner who did not understand that you have to paddle left to turn right. Unfortunately it was too dark for pictures.

Den letzten Tag haben wir im La Tortuguera Naturreservat verbracht. Das ist der größte Süßwassersee in Puerto Rico und wir sind da ziellos umhergewandert. 

The last day we spent in another nature reserve, La Tortuguera. It's the biggest sweet water lake in Puerto Rico and we aimlessly wandered around there.
