Arbeitsausflug - work outing

  Wir waren heute mit der Arbeitsgruppe auf Ausflug. Eigentlich sollte es nach dem Mittagessen zum Fussballgolf gehen aber glücklicherweise war das Wetter schlecht und wir sind stattdessen Glas blasen (gerade noch den Fehler erwischt, hatte zuerst Blas glasen geschrieben..) gegangen! Jeder von uns durfte eine Schale machen! Das fertige Produkt ist jetzt am abkühlen in der Werkstatt und ich zeig euch nächste Woche was ich gemacht habe.

Today we went to a work outing with our work group. We actually wanted to go for soccer-golf after lunch but luckily the weather was bad and we went glas blowing instead. Every one of us made one bowl. The finished product is now cooling of in the workshop and I can show you next week what I have made.

Valborg 1

Heute war das Bootrennen. Wir haben es bis zum Ende geschafft obwohl unser Boot am Ende kaum noch vorhanden war.  Wir haben den ersten Wasserfall ohne Verluste überstanden obwohl wir oben steckengeblieben sind (siehe dieses Video etwa bei 12 Minuten, wir sitzen in der Nebelkrähe) aber danach kam sehr flaches Wasser und wir sind auf Steinen aufgeschlagen und dabei haben wir unsere Pontons verloren, sowie eine Seite und der Schwanz und eine Sitzbank. Schwanz und Sitzbank konnten wir wieder einfangen und damit weiter fahren aber ich habe bei der Aktion mein Paddel verloren. Im zweiten Wasserfall sind wir wieder hängengeblieben an dem letzten halben Ponton der noch an uns hing und das drehte das Boot um. Also ging es rückwärts runter und das Boot hat sich unter umgedreht und wir gingen alle baden (noch ein Video). Ich bekam kurz Panik unterwasser, bis mir einfiel das ich eine Rettungsweste anhabe und dann habe ich mich daran festgehalten und gewartet bis ich wieder an die Oberfläche kam. Das dauerte allerdings meiner Meinung nach viel zu lange. Außerdem blieb ich dann mit der Weste unter dem Boot hängen und kam nicht richtig raus aber einer meiner Crew Mitglieder hat es bemerkt und mich rausgezogen. Das einzige was danach noch stand war der Kopf, eine Seite und ein Paddel hatten wir noch über. Alles andere haben wir verloren...


Today was the day of the race. We managed to get all the way to the end, although our boat was pretty destroyed by the end of it.  We managed the first waterfall without any losses even though we got stuck at first (you can see it in this video at around 12 minutes, we are in the hooded crow) but then the water was very shallow and we kept hitting rocks and then the pontoons fell off and one side plus the bench in the back and the tail but we were able to recover tail and side and kept on going. However, I lost my paddel in the recovery mission. In the second waterfall we got stuck again on the last half of the middle pontoon that was standing and that made the boat turn. So we went down backwards and flipped over at the bottom which made us all go under water (see video 2). I got a slight panic moment until I remembered that I was wearing a life jacket and then grapped on to that to wait until I got back up, which in my opinion took a bit too long and I got caught under the boat with my life jacket but one of my crew members managed to pull me out. The only thing left standing apart from the base was the head, one side and a paddle. Everything else we had lost.

Floß bauen - Raft building

Mittwoch ist das Rennen auf dem Fluss und wir haben dieses Wochenende unser Floß gebaut. Dazu gab es viel Styropor gestellt und ein paar Holzbalken.

Wednesday is the race on the river and we built our raft this weekend. We were given lots of Styrofoam and some wooden beams.

Wir hatten super tolles Wetter und ich hab einen ziemlichen Sonnenbrand von so vielen Sonnenstunden. 

We had amazing weather and I now have a pretty bad sunburn from all these hours in the sun.

Eisstockschießen - Curling

Letzte Woche hatten wir Arbeitsausflug zum Eisstockschießen. Hier ein paar Fotos.

Feuerschutz Übung - Fire safety course

Diese Woche hatten wir eine Feuerschutz Ausbildung durch die Arbeit. Wir waren auf dem Gelände der Feuerwehr und haben gelernt wie Feuer entsteht (bloss keine Stahlwolle in der Nähe von Batterien aufbewahren!), und dann haben wir gelernt es zu löschen. Wir haben Branddecken an Holzpuppen ausprobiert und Feuerlöscher an brennendem Benzin, mir hat der CO2 Feuerlöscher am besten gefallen. Dann hat der Feuerwehrmann uns noch eine Stichflamme gezeigt und ein paar Dosen explodieren lassen. Ganz am Ende wurden wir noch in ein Haus geführt, dass dann voll Rauch gepumpt wurde und wir sollten wieder herrausfinden...es hätte wohl keiner überlebt im Ernstfall.

This week we had a fire safety course through work. We went to the fire fighters site and learned how fire starts (do not keep steel wool close to batteries!) and then we learned how to extinguish it. We learned how to use fire blankets on wooden dolls and also fire extinguishers on burning petrol, i really liked the CO2 one. Then the fire fighter showed us an explosive flame and exploded some cans. At the end we got led into a house that was then pumped full of smoke and we were supposed to find our way out... No one would have survived had this been real.

Umzug - Move

Ich bin am Sonntag in ein neues Haus gezogen. Noch sind wir nicht vollständig eingerichtet aber die ersten Möbel sind mittlerweile im Wohnzimmer verteilt, müssen aber noch ordentlich gereinigt werden weil wir alles aus dem Roten Kreuz und zweiter Hand haben. Ab jetzt kann ich also auch Besuch empfangen. 

I moved to a new place this Sunday. We are not fully furnished yet but some furniture are now spread throughout the living room, they do have to be cleaned properly first however, because we got them from the red cross and from second hand. But now I can finally have people over.

Skitrip

Letztes Wochenende war ich mit den Kollegen in Sälen zum Skifahren. Es ist so ziemlich alles schief gelaufen was schief laufen konnte.

• Wir hatten kein Internet obwohl wir es gebucht hatten
• Wir haben 3 Skis und 2 Snowboards geliehen, bekommen haben wir 5 paar Ski
• Die Skistöcke sind während des Fahrens immer kleiner geworden
• Die Skischuhe haben mit nicht gepasst, bei einer Kollegin war ein riesiges Loch in der Isolierung
• Einige Skipässe haben den ersten Tag nicht funktioniert
• Das Wetter war unglaublich schlecht. Man hat garnicht gesehen wo die Piste eigentlich ist.
• Am 2ten Tag ist mir mein Handy explodiert.
• Ein Kollege hat sich direkt am ersten Abend beim Board wachsen verletzt.

Alles in allem war es aber doch sehr nett. Die Hütte war putzig und die Betten bequem und wir hatten eine kleine Sauna in der Wohnung. Ausserdem waren wir fast auf der Piste mit unserem Häuschen. Abends wurde gemeinsam gekocht und gegessen. Einen Abend sind wir zum schwimmen gegangen, im kleinsten Schwimmbad der Welt.
Sonntags, als wir dann auf der Piste unterwegs waren wurden wir angerufen und gefragt warum wir nicht ausgecheckt sind..."Weil wir bis morgen gebucht haben...", Das steht so nicht in ihrenUnterlagen, um 4 Uhr kommen die nächsten Mieter, bis dahin müssen wir raus! Also zurück zur Hütte, packen und putzen und dann nach Hause nachdem wir sichergestellt haben, dass wir für Montag unser Geld für die Pässe und die Leihski zurück bekommen. Also ein perfektes Ende für das ganze Chaos. Leider gibts auch keine Bilder wegen dem ganzen Nebel.

Last weekend I went skiing with my collegues in Sälen. And everything that could potentially go wrong, did go wrong. 

• We did not have Wifi even though we booked it. 
• We booked 3 pairs of skis and 2 snowboards to rent but we got 5 pairs of skis.
• The ski poles shrunk while skiing.
• My ski boots did not fit me, one of my collegues boots had a giant tear in the insolation.
• Some ski passes did not work on the first day
• The weather was horrible. You could not see where the slopes were.
• On the second day my phone exploded. 
• A colleague already hurt himself on the first night waxing his board.

But all in all it was very nice. The hut was cute and the beds comfy and we had a small sauna in the hut. Plus we were almost on the slopes. In the evenings we cooked and ate together. One evening we went swimming in the smallest public swimming pool in the world. 
On Sunday we got a call while on the slopes asking us why we haven't  checked out yet..."because we have booked till Monday...", that was not in their books and at 4pm new people would move in and we had to be out! So back to the hut, packing and cleaning up and then we drove home after we made sure we got our money back for the pass and the rentals that were booked for another day. So it was in some sense a perfect end to this entire mess. Unfortunately there are no pictures because of the fog. 

Short Update

Ewig nicht mehr geschrieben! Ich hab im Moment aber auch sehr viel zu tun.

Seit 3 Wochen bin ich in einem Statistikkurs bei dem ich sehr viel lesen muss und dann auch noch Übungen mithilfe von R am Computer lösen. Dann war auch die Department Days, die ich mit organisiert habe. Da hat sich jeder im Department vorgestellt, also wer er ist und was er forscht in kurzen Vorträgen. War sehr nett. Abends war dann auch ein Dinner und ich war für die Unterhaltung verantwortlich und habe ein Murder Mystery Dinner für 50 Leute geschrieben. Bis auf ein paar Leuten hat es ihnen sehr gut gefallen und ich hab am Ende ganz viel Applaus bekommen. 

Zudem habe ich jetzt angefangen zu klettern. Es gibt hier eine Bouldering Halle und viele der Kollegen gehen zwei bis dreimal die Woche. Bisher gehe ich nur Sonntags weil es so anstrengend ist und ich immer ein paar Tage brauche bis ich wieder ordentlich greifen kann. 

Langsam wirds auch wieder spürbar heller, allerdings sind die Wolkenschichten im Moment so dick, dass man nicht weiss wo gerade die Sonne steht. Ich vermiss Sonnenschein.. 

Haven't written in such a long time. At the moment I am super busy, though. 

Since about 3 weeks I am visiting a stats course that has a huge workload on reading and practicals that I have to solve by programming in R. Then there was also department days which I helped organize. At this event, everyone in the department introduced themselves and their research with a short presentation. It was very nice. In the evening we had a dinner. I was responsible for the entertainment and have written a murder mystery dinner for 50 people. Except a few people, everyone seemed to really like it and I got a lot of applause in the end. 

I have also taken up climbing. There is a bouldering hall here in Uppsala and many of my colleagues are going two to three times a week. I am only joining Sundays so far because it is very exhausting and I always need a couple of days until I can properly hold things again. 

It is getting lighter again, however we haven't had sunshine in a while. The clouds are currently so thick that you cannot tell where the sun is. I miss sunshine...
